Starting with iOS 14, Apple provides a new security feature called Private Address. This helps protect your private data while on public or unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks. Every device has their own, built-in address. This new feature randomly creates a new address so your device is less likely to be identified on public networks. This privacy protection is great on public networks such as coffee shops, airport Wi-Fi, etc. However, internally at Siena College we run several levels of security to protect your device. The device address is used to register and authorize your device to access Siena resources. Unfortunately, every time the mac address changes, it will no longer be registered on Siena's network. Disabling this for our network still allows you to enable it for all other Wi-Fi networks you may use.
Android 10 introduced a similar feature, but named it MAC address randomization. It functions the same as Apple's Private Wi-Fi address and must also be disabled.
The private address function can be disabled on an individual wi-fi network and only needs to be done for ""eduroam" and "SienaAir" at this time using the following instructions:
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or iPod touch
- Open the Settings app, then tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Information button
next to a eduroam or SienaAir network. - Tap to turn Private Address off.

Most Android 10+ Devices
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Network and Internet.
- Select WiFi.
- Connect to eduroam or SienaAir wireless network.
- Tap the gear icon next to the current wifi connection.
- Select Advanced.
- Select Privacy.
- Select "Use device MAC".
Samsung Galaxy:
- Navigate to "Settings"
- Select "Connections"
- Select "WiFi"
- Select "the Wireless Network you wish to connect to"
- Tap the gear shaped icon next to the network you connected to
- Select "Advanced"
- On the next screen there is a menu labeled "MAC Address Type".
- Tap on "MAC Address Type"
- Select “Use Phone/Device MAC”
